We all know that blow-drying, bleaching, and dyeing your locks can cause them to become dry, brittle, and damaged, but did you know that cold air also damages your hair?
In winter, your scalp becomes more prone to dehydration owing to the colder weather and indoor heaters dries out the scalp further leading to brittle hair.
While there are many hair products and treatments which can be purchased to alleviate this problem, these generally come with a hefty price tag, but the truth is that you can make hydrating hair masks using items you already have in your pantry!
Some of these hair mask recipes may sound good enough to eat, but they’ll be even better for your hair.
The Berry Eggy Oily
You’ll need:
- Strawberries
- Egg Yolk
- Olive Oil
The antioxidants in strawberries add both moisture and shine to your hair, the olive oil adds some much-needed moisture, and the proteins contained in egg yolk will strengthen the strands.
Use this mask when you have time to take a long, hot shower as it may be difficult to get the mask out of your hair in a single rinse.
The Banana Coconut Pear
You’ll need:
- Banana
- Avocado
- Coconut Oil
Instead of baking banana bread, rather use your overripe bananas for a hydrating hair mask instead.
Thanks to potassium and natural oils, the banana will soften and improve the elasticity of your hair to prevent split ends – much like online betting will protect you from boredom!
The coconut oil will add a delicious smell and hydration, while the avocado is crammed full of vitamin B which promotes hair growth and strengthens it.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon Yoghurt
You’ll need:
- Plain Yoghurt
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Lemon Juice
This hair mask is ideal for a deep clean as both the lemon and apple cider vinegar act as an astringent to remove product build-up and excess oil.
However, you needn’t worry that it will dry out your hair further as the plain yoghurt contains zinc and lactic acid which both have moisturising properties.
The Coconut Minty Jojoba Oil
You’ll need:
- Coconut Oil
- Peppermint Essential Oil
- Jojoba Oil
While some hair masks just coat the top layer of your hair, coconut oil actually penetrates the strands to moisturise your hair from the inside out.
Known for its incredible hydrating properties, jojoba oil can be purchased at the pharmacy and peppermint essential oil is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties which will sooth a dry, itchy, and flaky scalp.
The Sweet and Silky Avocado
You’ll need:
- Avocado
- Honey
- Olive Oil
While the fats found in both avocado and olive oil are great for a healthy body, they are also fantastic for a great head of hair.
These fats will repair your dry and brittle hair and also prevent further damage from blow-drying. If you’re looking for shine, the raw enzymes in honey will provide that in bucket loads.
Enjoy making these DIY hair masks and the beautiful head of hair they will provide you with!
